If Pope Benedict resigned because he is just too old and
feels he would not be able to do the job justice than he should be commended
for his decision to drop his ego and do what is right for the church and its
members.
BUT maybe there is another reason…
I have been made aware of an HBO documentary titled: MEA
MAXIMA CULPA: Silence in the House of God by Alex Gibney that was shown on HBO a
few weeks ago and will go to area theaters as well.
The documentary details one of the first cases of priestly
sexual abuse in the United States that went public. It involves St. John’s
School for the Deaf in Milwaukee and Father Lawrence Murphy who for 24 years,
raped and molested nearly 200 young deaf boys.
Needless to say, Fr. Murphy remained a free man and a priest
until his death in 1998; no punishment whatsoever.
Here is where Pope Benedict or Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger comes
in.
Every report of priestly pedophilia went directly to the
office of THE CONGREGATION FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH in Rome, which handled
all these cases. Cardinal Ratzinger was in charge of this organization and
therefore was responsible for investigating these cases and taking appropriate
actions in these cases (1981-2005).
As we all know, nothing was done to stop these priests from
abusing young boys and in fact a giant cover-up was diligently put into place.
It was when four (4) of the deaf boys molested by Fr.
Murphy, now men, sued the Vatican that all hell broke loose and the truth
started spilling out.
The complicity of Benedict/Ratzinger may even go back all
the way to when he was the Archbishop of Munich, Germany where he moved abuser priests
from parish to parish.
So did the pope see the writing on the wall?
Mea Maxima Culpa as we know means “my most maximum/grievous
fault” uttered when confessing your sins to God.
As a sitting pope, he would have been immune from criminal
prosecution as a head of state but as a retired priest/bishop maybe not.
Does he really want to pay for his sins against humanity?
A
noble gesture it would be to offer himself as a scapegoat for all the priestly
sins committed for so long, to be sacrificed on the altar of earthly justice?
Wow!
