Detroit is on the verge of being taken over by an emergency financial
manager (EFM). The EMF is black, educated at the University of Michigan and an
expert at financial turnarounds; perfect for the job.
Most people in the state of Michigan as well as in the city
of Detroit, including the newspapers and other media, agree that the EFM is
absolutely necessary and in the best interests of all concerned.
I have mentioned before that there is a very vocal minority
that is absolutely against the EFM and plan to do everything in their power to
stop the EFM from doing his job.
In this Sunday paper, a local commentary section was titled:
DEMOCRACY BETRAYED IN A BLOODLESS COUP IN DETROIT by Greg Bowens. Mr. Bowens asks
“How is it possible that an elected body can vote to affirm the idea that one
person should rule a community?
Bowens is not the only person against the EFM but many
Baptist pastors from Detroit as well as other “activists” including Jessie Jackson
have come out vehemently against the rule of an EFM.
I asked a simple question: What argument do you make against
the EFM?
The answer is that the dictatorial rule of the EFM is overriding
their freedom to an elected government. In other words, how can the principal
of democratic freedom be pushed to the side and invalidate the people’s voting
rights; killing democracy.
I can understand the argument as the right of the state to
impose a limited-time dictatorship on free and democratic peoples.
The answer is easy; the governor has the legal right and
maybe even an obligation, to save a city from the brink of financial ruin when
it is obvious that the city cannot save itself.
Detroit’s inability to govern itself has resulted in city
services being slow or even lacking. These services include police protection,
fire and medical emergency protection creating a dangerous environment for city
residents.
It is quite obvious that the city culture of corruption and
nepotism as evidenced by the Kilpatrick trial, has resulted in a totally
incapable and incompetent city government structure and this has been years in
the making.
So the brutal answer to those screaming that their voting
rights have been suspended, one can say that your votes is what got the city in
trouble; you voted for corrupt and incompetent leaders over and over again and
therefore you are incapable of voting smartly and so, for the time being, you
have to be led by a dictator that is not corrupt or incompetent.
Unfortunately, once the city is saved from financial ruin
and order is imposed, Detroiters will once again get a chance to elect more and
more corrupt and incompetent leaders.
Since the arguments of these so called activists for freedom
have no basis in the reality on the ground, my question would be WHY are they
protesting so much when their arguments are baseless?
I have asked this question before and am still trying to
find the motivating cause for such lunacy.
Are the Baptist pastors going to see less in the Sunday
collection plates since union benefits will be cut? Do these pastors and others
want national exposure so they can be seen as somehow racial heroes and garner
donations from others supporting playing the race card for profit?
I am at a loss for an explanation of why some Detroiters
would be against something that can only make their lives better…
