LEGION OF CHRIST: The story...

Now let me tell you about the LEGION OF CHRIST and what the big hubbub is all about.

You may not have heard much about the whole affair because the Vatican has gone to great lengths to keep it under wraps and I think that will be the most damaging aspect of this sordid situation but we can never forget the many innocent children and adults that have been damaged by the people involved, people that were people of God and therefore trusted and admired by the laity around them.

The Catholic group of priests and seminarians was founded in 1941 in Mexico by Marcial Maciel who presided over the group till 2006; he died in 2008. The group was committed to education, youth and family ministry and runs schools and other institutions in many countries around the world.

Popes supported the group through the decades and especially Pope John Paul II who held up the founder as a model to be emulated even though reports were surfacing about Marciel raping and molesting young seminarians and fathering children with a number of women as well as the fact that he was a drug addict and pedophile.

An interesting side note is that an original vow taken by people joining the group was to never criticize their superiors…interesting don’t you think?

Anyway, it has fallen to Benedict XVI to do something about the Legion and he has decided to reform the Legion instead of banning it into oblivion as many have recommended. Recently more reports of priests molesting children have surfaced throwing doubt into his reform efforts.

The reason reports of abuse are coming out into the public domain is due to groups of victims who are banding together to demand justice; the Vatican can no longer silence these groups or even buy their silence.

And speaking about money, the group was rich and Marciel was known to dispense money very freely to hierarchs in Rome which some say allowed Marciel to continuing to do what he did without any interference from the Vatican.

The fact that the Legion has vigorously denied any wrong doing for decades and their denials were supported by the Vatican make their current condemnation of all the evil that transpired at the Legion basically vacuous.

The Vatican now claims that there was a “mechanism of defense” around Maciel that made him basically “untouchable” and all I can say is BULLSHIT! The Vatican even had the gall to acknowledge the “hardships” faced by Maciel’s accusers throughout the years, who were ostracized and ridiculed by the Legion and the Vatican.

I don’t know if many Catholics recognize the enormity of this situation. The Vatican is spinning this situation to get itself absolved of any guilt and it will succeed if allowed to just like it has done for centuries…do you watch the BORGIAS on HBO or is it STARZ?

I will admit that many U.S. bishops have banned the Legion from operating in their areas since the Vatican was not officially dissolving the Legion or banning it outright.

Throughout the history of the Catholic Church, times of extreme corruption and abuse among the clergy especially the leadership, were met with some sort of reformation movement that cleaned things up until things got too dirty again; I don’t see that movement on the horizon, I only see cover-ups and media spinning campaigns.

Reformation has usually come from within the Church and it usually is started by people with power and that means clergy and not the sheepish laity…let us see if anyone has the balls to step up to the plate with a bat in hand…

LEGION OF CHRIST: A den of iniquity?

There have been many stories about the LEGION OF CHRIST and its now infamous founder, MARCIAL MACIEL (1920-2008) but today, I have noticed the continuing scandal has reached our doorstep in the name of the Rev. Thomas Williams, a native of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Father Williams, a member of the legion of Christ and a well known spokesman for the Vatican on NBC and CBS has stepped down from his role as professor of moral theology at the Legion’s university in Rome.

The reason for him stepping down and taking a sabbatical from active ministry was the fact that he had fathered a child some years back and as hard as the Legion tried to keep it a secret, it finally came out and he as well as the Legion, had to admit to the cover-up and of course, their utter, utter hypocrisy.

In now appears that there are a number of Legion priests under investigation for sexual abuse (sound familiar) and the Vatican can no longer keep it under wraps.

I will have a lot more about the age-old scandal and cover-up but as to Father Williams, who was called Father-What-A-Waste by Katie Couric because he was so handsome, I can only say that at least he was not a child molester like a lot of his fellow clerics were and are.

He was handsome and was attractive to women who are also attracted to priests as forbidden fruit. He acted on his normal human instincts but instead of doing the “right thing”, he decided that he would have the best of both worlds; sex with women and a comfortable life as well regarded professor and author and a professed celibate. One of his 14 books was titled: Knowing Right from Wrong: A Christian Guide to Conscience.

My problem with him is that he lived a life based on a lie and he taught students a code of conduct and conscience that he did not follow or believe in. My problem with the Church is that it compels priests to live lives that are totally abnormal and changes them into people that are not quite human and members of our human society.

My problem with the Church and its leaders is that living a lie seems quite OK to them and covering-up priestly sins are somehow OK with God if it’s done in the name of keeping a false façade in place so church members keep thinking that their leaders are somehow holier than they are and that they truly represent Jesus on earth and all their pronouncements about all things should be treated as the Gospel truth and obeyed without thought.

I guess I am puzzled that with all the shit rising to the surface at the Vatican, how can Catholics keep acting as if nothing has changed…are they all really a bunch of sheep?

WISCONSIN CATHOLICS REVOLT...

In the May 8th Wall Street Journal an article caught my eye: BISHOP WEIGHS IN ON PARISH REVOLT.

The bishop was Robert Morlino and the parishes in question are in Platteville, Wisconsin; a farming community.

It seems the general lack of priests in the U.S. forced the church to assign two Spanish priests to the parishes in Platteville. These priests brought with them their own Catholic culture which bans female altar servers, has a strict dress code for mass services and emphasizes doctrinal orthodoxy in sermons and pushed the act of confession as the best road to salvation.

Well it appears that the parishioners did not like what these priests were doing and started proceedings to have the priests removed; many stopped going to mass and stopped supporting the church.

I guess the bigger issue here is about the current pope pushing the church backwards to tradition and orthodoxy and American Catholics wanting the church to adapt to changing times; something has gotta’ give!

Bishop Morlino, head of the Madison, Wisconsin diocese, basically threatened the protesters by saying he can do an “interdict” and ban them from the sacraments so shut up and be good little sheep and just obey.

Some of the people that quit the church said that these conservative priests concentrated on sin and confession and not charity and embracing others as in the golden rule and they have a very valid point here; the new backward trend in the Catholic Church does not emphasize service to humanity but a return to strict order and tradition.

Some Catholics obviously welcome the return to the strict old days but more and more Catholics see the church as no longer representing their feelings and their beliefs and they bridle at the church’s idiotic and nonsensical stances on social issues.

American parishioners are joined by American nuns and priests that share their concern for the direction of their church and religion and as I have said before…something has got to give and the church does not have much room to maneuver anymore.

Church leaders have failed miserably at their jobs and have to be held accountable; even dictators can be deposed.

OBAMA ON GAY MARRIAGE

Well a little history was made today. Obama announced that on a personal level, he supports gay marriage and no sitting president has ever said that.

In North Carolina, voters voted to place into their constitution the legal and only acceptable definition of marriage which is between a man and a woman; they did this even though they had a law on their books that banned gay marriage; I guess they wanted to be doubly sure gays will never marry in North Carolina.

Obama took a political risk in what he said but he could no longer equivocate on his position and needed to make a stand especially since Vice President Biden let the cat out of the bag earlier.

The political risk is not as great as before because most Americans have no problems with gays marrying and more and more families have gay members; remember John McCain’s daughter and Dick Chaney’s daughter?

My position on homosexuality has been that the gay sexual preference is and has always been, never a “choice” but an act of nature and if you choose to believe that gays “choose” that lifestyle over a heterosexual lifestyle, than you are severely naïve and delusional.

Since gays are members of the human race they deserve all the rights and benefits afforded to all humans and members of society and that includes the right to marry.

The problem that a lot of people have with gay marriage is the “marriage” part; many will agree to “civil unions” but not to “marriage” and that is because to many “marriage” holds some type of religious connotation and in their minds, religions usually condemn homosexuality and therefore cannot possibly marry people they condemn.

The problem in this country is that we allow churches to “legally” marry people. In Europe you can ONLY be legally married by a justice who issues a “civil union” document to the two people getting wed. IF you wish to be married in a church of your choice, you can BUT that church marriage is only symbolic and holds no legal standing in the eyes of the government.

I hope you understood the difference but historically speaking, marriage between two people has always been a “civil” ceremony until the Catholic Church got involved; they wanted to control everything. In Europe and other places, the church is kept out of the legal marrying business as it should be here.

To me, the fact that we as Americans, can vote on whether gays can legally marry, is an abomination, especially when we stand for liberty and happiness for all.

Religion and religious beliefs are the root causes of many of our disagreements on social issues and what is frustrating is that the people who so strongly object to specific issues based on their religious beliefs have no idea where those beliefs came from and why they treat them as legitimate.

I have always got a kick out of the Baptists being so adamant against drinking alcohol cause’ the Bible tells them so but when confronted with the passage in the New testament that has Jesus turn water into wine for the enjoyment of the wedding guests, they simply stare into space.

In fact, the new movement of “what would Jesus do” or how would he feel about today’s issues points directly at the inclusiveness of Jesus throughout his ministry and the fact that he welcomed all who were society outcasts…think about that.

Anyway, I will have more on the religious argument against homosexuality later.

Let me just finish by saying that Obama did not go out on a dangerous political limb as many think; he said that these were “personal” views on homosexuality and that each state should decide if they wish to allow gays to “marry”; obviously North Carolina has decided but I feel the issue will be revisited there in the near future.

After Obama’s announcement, millions of dollars started flowing into his campaign coffers; many gays are intelligent and well educated and that makes many of them rich and not afraid to put their money where it will do the most good…

2012 PETITIONS: Be aware of what you are signing...

Pretty soon you will encounter a bunch of people that will want you TO SIGN THEIR PETITION to place their issue on the November ballot.

First thing you have to understand is that many of these people will be people that are getting paid $2 per signature although some may be volunteers.

The second thing to remember is that they will use any persuasion trick they can to get you to sign even misrepresenting the petition or plain ole’ LYING.

The best way to protect yourself from signing something you do not support is to be aware of the petitions that are circulating this year.

I will always have a problem with RECALL PETITIONS mainly because they go against what has been legally done whether electing a person or passing legislation; if you don’t like the person that was elected or legislation that was passed…don’t vote for the person or persons responsible in the next legal election; recall petitions to me are undemocratic!

This year I WILL NOT SIGN ANY PETITIONS accept the one LEGALIZING MARIJUAHNA!

1.                    The UAW is spending millions to block a RIGHT-TO-WORK LAW. This is a bullshit petition trying to keep union power in place which will continue to rip the public off while denying accountability measures.

2.                   Forcing Michigan to get 25% of its energy from renewable sources is a good idea but “forcing” anything is not so vote NO.

3.                   The proposal to unionize home health workers just really pisses me off. Home workers do not want to be unionized because there is no benefit to being unionized but the SEIU union has been taking money from their small checks for union dues until Snyder put a stop to it. Vote a big NO on this one.

4.                  Legalizing marijuana is a no brainer to me. I like to drink vodka but I am aware of the problems of drinking too much vodka can bring so if my government allows me to drink vodka they sure as hell should allow someone to smoke a joint if they want to…it makes perfect sense to me and I hope you.

I am amazed at the lengths people will go to get what they want even when it makes no sense to the rest of us but hey, its our democratic system so be aware of the scoundrals around you and do not get taken in by their bullshit.

DETROIT: Rochelle Riley adds her voice...

The article by Nolan Finley about Mike Duggan wanting to become the mayor of Detroit even though he is white has drawn some interest.

Rochelle Riley, a much respected black columnist for the Detroit Free Press just wrote an article titled: Detroit voters must look beyond race (May 4, 2012).

In the article she says that Detroit does not need a white savior, it needs the “right” savior whatever color he may be or gender or ethnicity.

She talked with George Jackson, president and CEO of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation and a former Detroit development czar.

He is a supporter of current Mayor Bing but admits that Mike Duggan has the attributes to be a mayor and people want someone who they feel can get the job done…period!

Obama was not elected president because he is black but because he convinced millions of people that he can actually bring change and the people believed him.

Detroit has some severe problems and among them unions that have grown fat and lazy through decades of getting what they want in exchange for votes. The mayor needs to stand up and tell them no but they will battle back and they don’t care if the mayor is white or black, they will fight just the same to keep their cushy positions.

Ms. Riley states that there should be no assumptions that if a white candidate wins a race in Detroit, then black leadership has come to an end, but that is exactly what the loudest residents of Detroit will say but what will the silent majority say and that is the key here.

Responsible black leaders like George Jackson will have to make their voices heard and even though they will be taunted like other responsible black leaders with cries of “Uncle Tom”, they need to stand up for what they feel is the best course for the city and its people.

These responsible black business leaders will go up against the very loud and obnoxious Detroit cadre of Baptist ministers that for some reason, want the races divided even though I have to believe that not all black pastors in Detroit are of the same ilk. I do know personally that in some Detroit black seminaries where they teach people how to be pastors, racism is rampant and this is where they learn to “love thy neighbor?"…

I must assume that being a black pastor is a business and if you are to get rich at this religion thing, you need to fill your pews and what better way than to preach racism; can’t do that if your church becomes integrated like those damn Catholic churches.

The bottom line is that somebody other than black pastors are going to have to speak for the people of Detroit and successful business and academic men and women would be a great group to shed some much needed sanity on how to get Detroit up and running again.

Mike Duggan: Mayor of Detroit?

Recently a conservative Detroit News columnist wrote a piece titled “Is Detroit ready for white mayor?”

He wrote the article because Mike Duggan, a white, political machine politician that has been around Detroit politics forever, just moved into Detroit from the suburbs and started talking about running for mayor of Detroit.

I will mention at the outset that Raymond Wojtowicz, a white, Polish guy that is a millions years old, has been the Wayne County Treasurer forever…why...I don’t even vote for him.

Duggan has been around Detroit politics as County Executive, County Prosecutor and recently he ran the Detroit Medical Center which was going bankrupt until he arrived and resuscitated it, sold it and made it into a going concern.

Yes he is a politician but he is definitely very competent and as far as I know, clean of any corruption; in other words someone Detroit government has not seen in years.

Dave Bing, the current mayor whom I have supported at the outset with genuine gusto, has been disappointing in that he was clean but his competency became a question. He had and has the heart and the determination to do what is right for the city but he was not a real executive and failed to surround himself with competent people and when things started unraveling and bankruptcy was inevitable; he started playing the race card as a means of defending himself.

Bing will run again because he likes being in the spotlight and likes the trappings of office and people in Detroit that still insist on a black mayor will elect him.

The Rev. Charles Williams, a Detroit pastor, on a local talk show talking about the Finley article did not think Detroit would vote for a white mayor because the city is 90% black and they want a black mayor who is culturally and racially connected to them which is, according to him, absolutely OK.

He added that this is not a racist position or a separatist position, it is just voting for someone you feel will represent you the best.

The moderator of the show asked about a black man as the president of a white majority country but Williams said that Obama could be considered white also…and he has a point there, although Americans believe your skin color determines what race you are and not the race of your parents as in Tiger Woods case who had an Asian mother and a father that was part African-American and part American Indian; Tiger is considered black…period.

The Rev. Williams then changed from the race issue and said that Duggan could not get elected because he is a part of the one (1%) and is not really from the community and does not understand the community. The current mayor of Detroit was also not part of the community, was a basketball player for the Pistons and then became a businessman, a career few in Detroit could relate to.

There is no question that race and power are key in Detroit but are they key to everyone or are they key just to the people that speak the loudest because their welfare depends on the continuation of the dysfunctional but beneficial to some, status quo.

It would seem logical that Detroiters are so fed up with the lack of service, the corruption, the rising lawlessness of the streets and the utter incompetency of their leaders to do anything about those problems that they would take a chance on a white guy with a proven record of getting things done?

Maybe Mike Duggan can sense that and maybe he can get black leaders that care about Detroit residents and not their own welfare, to back him?

We may be in for a very interesting season…

KWAME KENYATTA: Good riddance...In with the new!

Kwame Kenyatta of the Detroit City Council is calling it quits 18 months before his term runs out…why?

Kenyatta is the fellow that opposed any state intervention in the hapless condition of the City of Detroit calling the intervention as the master coming to the plantation to order people around.

His unfortunate racist attitude and that of many residents of the city is what brought the city to its economic knees and is prohibiting the city from getting up from those knees and standing tall again.

I have often talked about the culture of incompetence and corruption in the city government that has to be addressed if the city is to become a legitimate city once again and Kenyatta, although not caught up in the corruption that has stained city government, was an example of the incompetence that prevailed in city government and made it incapable of addressing the myriad ills of the city in any sensible and constructive ways; he was and is all about black control even if that is over a carcass of the city.

Kenyatta is also seeing the handwriting on the wall since future elections to the city council will be according to wards or districts and not “at-large” where people in the central city elected ALL members of the council.

Elections by district means that just being black is enough to get you elected; you now have to convince the electorate that you are capable of helping that district prosper or at least get the city services they deserve. In the past, council members were not responsible to any one group of city residents or any specific area of the city; all that will change and in my opinion, for the better.

CONFEDERATE MONUMENTS: Stay or Go...

Another subject that I feel needs some clarification because it is so divisive among us is the issue of Confederate Monuments, why they ...
