UAW AT VW: The usual tactics...

Some time ago, I wrote about the UAW (United Auto Workers) union trying to unionize the VW plant in Chattanooga, TN.

The UAW has failed miserably in trying to unionize foreign firms located in the South because the South is usually anti-union (Right-To-Work states). The difference at VW is that German manufacturing companies have what are called “works councils” at each plant to help workers and management communicate and work out plant problems. Here in the U.S. our laws stipulate that only outside unions can represent workers at a plant…stupid law?

Anyway, I warned then that letting the UAW gain a foothold at a foreign auto manufacturer would doom the rest of the foreign manufacturers in the South and play havoc with the economy of the South which is doing great thanks to these foreign auto plants.

And that is what happened in Tennessee as soon as people found out about the UAW’s intentions. The governor and senator of the state were up in arms saying if the UAW gets in VW no other company will want to locate in Tennessee and they are absolutely right and this is not a good thing for the people of Tennessee.

It was also discovered that the UAW was up to its usual tricks getting workers to sign their petitions by telling them that it was only for more information on the union and not an actual consent for the union to represent them. The UAW has also been known to send in union goons to intimidate workers to sign.

In response to all this, a anti-union workers group has formed to collect signatures rejecting the UAW’s attempts to unionize the plant. The leaders of this group are confident they can win the battle against the UAW but the UAW has money and is not afraid to bribe people to get their way.

Here is hoping the UAW is not allowed to prolong its own life…

POPE FRANCIS: A Breath of Fresh Air?

Just read a great article by Miami Herald columnist Leonard Pitts Jr. entitled POPE A LONG OVERDUE BREATH OF FRESH AIR FROM THE VATICAN (Free Press 9-27-2013).

Pitts is very impressed with the new pope; his humility, his inclusiveness, unpretentiousness, concern for the poor and nonjudgmental but what most surprises him is the fact that we are all so shocked by his behavior as in the fact that we do not expect such behavior from people of faith…think about that a little.

Pitts says that when we see this new pope declaring the dignity of the poor, the inclusion of the marginalized, the denial of self, the infinity of God’s compassion and people are surprised by this new thing…

He ends by saying that isn’t the pope showing what faith was supposed to be all along?????

The Gospels tell us that Jesus led by example; is the pope emulating Jesus?

What does this say about Catholic leadership up to this point; a breath of fresh air indeed.

SYRIA: A quagmire to avoid...

In my last post on Syria, I warned against arming the rebels too quickly against Assad unless we are very sure that the rebels we are arming are actually on our side.

Syria has been a more or less stable country for many decades because the dictator there did not put up with religious nonsense and put down any insurrection with brutality; Syria was governed as a secular state.

Many of the rebels fighting the Assad regime are now calling for an ISLAMIC STATE. This sounds a lot like al-Qaeda to me and smells like trouble for all involved.

These rebels have already shown their brutality in dealing with opponents and may foretell the making of another IRAN which is obviously supporting those rebels.

What we have here is the classic Shia vs. Sunni with Alawites (Shia variation) thrown into the mix. What I am saying is that no matter which rebel group we support with arms; a civil war is assured.

We are all gong-ho about destroying Assad’s stockpile of chemical weapons which is OK and especially with Russia cooperating with us but getting rid of the Assad regime (as is our goal) may not be in our best interests giving the reluctance of Americans to open up another military strife where our troops could be killed.

Unfortunately, Syria is a quagmire for us and therefore should be avoided at all costs.

What should we do? Nothing…let them all kill each other.

We could offer aid to all the refugees produced by all the in-fighting; the usual and real victims of this strife.

OBAMACARE: Move on Republicans, quit acting like children...

The attempt by Congressional Republicans to “de-fund” Obamacare at this late date (goes into effect October 1) is beyond stupid; it is downright childish.

Especially childish was the filibuster on the Senate floor by Texas Senator Ted Cruz who made an ass of himself even according to his fellow Republicans…watch as he runs for president in 2016.

I will be the first to admit that Obamacare is not perfect and will definitely need more refinement to be efficient but it was passed by Congress and is a law so why the fuck try to stop it now?

In the last election the country had a choice between Obamacare and a candidate that would kill Obamacare; guess who lost so WTF…the people have spoken and so listen to the people.

Our health care system needed fixing and so Obamacare was proposed and passed; what the fuck did the Republicans propose?

I am sick and tired of politics and politicians but I am especially sick and tired of certain Republican assholes (not all are assholes) who think the Tea Party is a real party and has to be obeyed.

POPE FRANCIS: What the Church desperately needs...

Well everybody should be aware by now about the interview Pope Francis gave to the Jesuit News and what he said in that interview that resounded all over the world and especially in the Catholic world.

I am becoming more and more impressed with this man every day. The emphasis is on the word “man” because he does not hold himself up to be something more than a man as other popes have and that is a very telling characteristic of this pope.

What did he say that made every Catholic take notice? He said enough with this war on abortion, gay marriage and contraception; we are more than just those issues, we are a church; a welcoming church.

In this Sunday’s New York Times, Frank Bruni (gay Catholic) wrote a great piece called THE POPE’S RADICAL WHISPER where he revels in the pope’s humility and humanity.

In the interview, Francis made clear that the flock harbored as much wisdom as the shepherds…really? He presents himself as a person that does not have all the answers and one who is not afraid to say “who am I to judge” when asked about gay priests.

I listened to the reactions especially here in the U.S. and from the U.S. cardinals who have been total assholes when it comes to those issues Francis said to downplay. They said that Church teachings have not changed (which they have not) trying to defend their pompous position on those issues for all these years while neglecting what Francis calls, the true mission of the Gospel and Christ and that is to tend to their flocks.

I am anxiously awaiting his future pronouncements on the direction he wants the church to take. What a breath of fresh air finally being blown into that dark cauldron of evil called the Vatican.

For those who know Catholic history, the choice of St. Francis as his namesake is very deliberate. St. Francis was all about humility and tending the poor but he also challenged the behavior of the men at the Vatican and called for reform in the church which has grown rich, fat and corrupt.

The times are similar and the church desperately needs reform but is stubbornly resisting any reform hiding behind their cloak of infallibility and superiority as if they alone communicated with god and therefore were privileged with the knowledge of what is right and what is wrong…so much horseshit and after all these many centuries…

Francis may be a real saint coming to rescue the church from receding into oblivion because it no longer is relevant in people’s lives.

DON'T LET UAW INTO VW HERE!!!

Haven’t written about UNION issues in a while but the news about the UAW (United Auto Workers) talking to VW (Volkswagen) about possible UNIONIZATION at their plant in Chattanooga, TN perked my interest up.

The UAW has been desperately trying to unionize foreign auto manufacturers in the United States for years. The UAW is basically dying because there really is no need for their form of unionization in our day and age.

Yes, there was a need for the UAW at one point in our industrial history but now they are just guys trying to hang on to the good life at the worker’s expense.

The UAW has not been able to unionize any foreign auto makers in the U.S. because most are located in the South where unions are not looked on favorably by the population (Communists) and because many Southern states are Right-to-Work states which Michigan just became (the hub of the UAW).

The attempt to unionize VW in Chattanooga is a little different in that the UAW will not employ their usual bullying tactics to get workers to vote the union into the plant; the UAW may be invited to join a WORKS COUNCIL at the plant.

In Germany, manufacturing plants have works councils that are composed of labor and management and deal with any and all labor issues at the plant. This has proven to be an effective way to deal with labor issues and the German unions at VW are pushing for the establishment of a works council system in the U.S. facility but labor laws are very different in both countries.

If the American workers at VW (2,000) vote to allow the UAW to join such a council; the UAW is in and we may expect that to also be applied to Mercedes-Benz in Alabama and BMW in South Carolina; the other German auto makers in the U.S.

Although I would be in favor of works councils on principle, allowing the UAW into German auto manufacturing plants in the U.S. is like allowing a fox into a hen house; it is dangerous and could prove very detrimental to the workers, the company and to the state where the plants are located.

I don’t know all the facts about this issue yet but am very concerned that this move could give the UAW a new life when in fact it needs to die because there is absolutely no logical reason for them to exist.

CONFEDERATE MONUMENTS: Stay or Go...
