Just read a great article by Miami Herald columnist Leonard
Pitts Jr. entitled POPE A LONG OVERDUE BREATH OF FRESH AIR FROM THE VATICAN
(Free Press 9-27-2013).
Pitts is very impressed with the new pope; his humility, his
inclusiveness, unpretentiousness, concern for the poor and nonjudgmental but
what most surprises him is the fact that we are all so shocked by his behavior
as in the fact that we do not expect such behavior from people of faith…think
about that a little.
Pitts says that when we see this new pope declaring the
dignity of the poor, the inclusion of the marginalized, the denial of self, the
infinity of God’s compassion and people are surprised by this new thing…
He ends by saying that isn’t the pope showing what faith was
supposed to be all along?????
The Gospels tell us that Jesus led by example; is the pope emulating
Jesus?
What does this say about Catholic leadership up to this
point; a breath of fresh air indeed.
