SYRIA: A quagmire to avoid...

In my last post on Syria, I warned against arming the rebels too quickly against Assad unless we are very sure that the rebels we are arming are actually on our side.

Syria has been a more or less stable country for many decades because the dictator there did not put up with religious nonsense and put down any insurrection with brutality; Syria was governed as a secular state.

Many of the rebels fighting the Assad regime are now calling for an ISLAMIC STATE. This sounds a lot like al-Qaeda to me and smells like trouble for all involved.

These rebels have already shown their brutality in dealing with opponents and may foretell the making of another IRAN which is obviously supporting those rebels.

What we have here is the classic Shia vs. Sunni with Alawites (Shia variation) thrown into the mix. What I am saying is that no matter which rebel group we support with arms; a civil war is assured.

We are all gong-ho about destroying Assad’s stockpile of chemical weapons which is OK and especially with Russia cooperating with us but getting rid of the Assad regime (as is our goal) may not be in our best interests giving the reluctance of Americans to open up another military strife where our troops could be killed.

Unfortunately, Syria is a quagmire for us and therefore should be avoided at all costs.

What should we do? Nothing…let them all kill each other.

We could offer aid to all the refugees produced by all the in-fighting; the usual and real victims of this strife.
