WILL US BISHOPS FOLLOW THE LEAD OF FRANCIS?

There was an interesting article in the Detroit Free Press today titled: U.S. BISHOPS AT CROSSROADS by Patricia Montemurri (Nov. 11, 2013) which discussed the upcoming conference of U.S. bishops in Baltimore today.

These American bishops were basically promoted by the last few popes who happened to be pretty conservative so they promoted men who though like they did. These U.S. bishops are the ones that Pope Francis now calls “obsessed” with abortion, gay marriage and contraception issues.

Now that Francis is pope and is definitely not obsessed with the above mentioned issues; do the American bishops now need to get “un-obsessed” or start focusing on what Francis wants them to focus on which is mainly the poor and disenfranchised?

We have seen many Catholics including priests and nuns speak out against the Vatican’s war on society but can we have bishops speak out against the pope and his very different ideas as to what the church should be focused on?

Can these bishops change their message to reflect the new pope’s views?

This will be very interesting to watch…hope the pope stays healthy and is not poisoned by those that disagree with him…as has happened in the past.

CONSERVATIVE CATHOLICS angry with Francis!

There was a great article in this Sunday’s New York Times entitled: CONSERVATIVE U.S. CATHOLICS FEEL LEFT OUT OF THE POPE’S EMBRACE by Laurie Goodstein.

I have stated many times that the Catholic Church needed a “revolutionary” pope if it was to survive as a viable religion, a religion people would be drawn to and not repelled by. Currently people are leaving the church because they no longer feel the church is connected to the people but has become an arrogant institution focused on self-preservation and nothing else.

Pope Francis is that revolutionary pope and has already created a positive vibe among people of all religions and not just Catholics BUT conservative Catholics are pissed at Francis; they want a pope to be like the popes of the past; unyielding to modernity; not listening to people but dictating to the people how they should live their lives. To these conservative Catholics, the Catholic Church is all knowing and all good and should be obeyed without question…these people obviously do not believe the priestly sex scandal ever occurred.

I have to point out here that most Catholics applaud Pope Francis and agree with him when he says that the Church has gotten too obsessed with the issues of abortion, gay marriage and contraception; issues that are fundamental to efforts by the American Catholic Church.

Why are conservative Catholics pissed at Francis? I have already mentioned that Francis is intentionally not speaking out on abortion, gay marriage and contraception because he does not want the church to be “obsessed” with those issues anymore.

Conservative Catholics are also pissed off at Francis for saying that people should follow the good and fight the evil as THEY conceive them; conservatives have counted on the church to tell them what is good and what is evil and here Francis is saying that people already know what is good and what is evil…are you kidding me…now that is revolutionary.

Francis also said that to him the greatest evils right now are “youth unemployment” and “loneliness of the old”. I happen to know a lot about loneliness of the old as our family has older members who are pathologically lonely and depressed; it is a real issue.

Francis also called proselytizing “solemn nonsense” which basically says trying to convert people to your religion or your belief system is nonsense.

And what about the pope’s response to gay issues saying “Who am I to judge”…that is huge and has allowed Catholic legislators who vote for gay marriage in their states to answer their Catholic critics by saying “Who am I to judge”…this is just too good to be true!

Some conservative Catholics are resorting to age old prophesies that predicted a “false church of darkness” especially now that we actually have two (2) existing popes living side by side…

Yes the conservatives are up in arms thinking that Francis is trying to destroy THEIR church / religion. These people obviously know nothing about the history of the church and the history of the many popes that have come before Francis.

Francis is a breath of fresh air that the church desperately needs. I see Francis as emulating Jesus of the Gospels as no other pope in modern times.

Mother Teresa, right before she died, said that prayer was worthless because there is no God listening to those prayers but her actions in this world helping the poor, sick and destitute was a very humanistic dedication of one’s life and Francis, by guiding the church back to serving the people and not just telling them what to do, follows in Mother Teresa’s footsteps and the steps and action of Jesus himself.

OUR TRIP TO LAX...we lucked out!

Friday, November 1, 2013 we embarked on a trip to visit our son Zak and his wife Kimberly and 6-month old son Schroeder, now living in Los Angeles, California.

We left Detroit (DTW) and headed for the airport in LA called LAX.

About 2 hours into the trip, the guy sitting in our row and listening to the news, told us that there was a shooting at LAX and that the airport was closed.

We notified the flight attendant who was very surprised and she went over to the cockpit and notified the pilot who was even more surprised since he had not been informed about the situation at LAX.

The pilot actually came on the PA and thanked us for letting him know. Unfortunately the situation at LAX was going to change our plans and the plans of the many planes headed for LAX.

We were diverted to Salt Lake City, Utah where we landed and de-planed but re-planed in 30 minutes, which was a great turn-around time since we feared we were going to have to overnight in Salt Lake City.

We landed at LAX with no trouble but that is when the fun really began.

Since the airport was closed for so many hours, everything was backed-up big time. We needed to get a rental car at Hertz but remember that many people dropping off their rental cars were stuck there and could not get to the airport to catch their scheduled flights. Also, all of us that landed at LAX were stuck at the airport because no rental company buses were allowed to enter the airport…it took hours to get things moving again but once at Hertz, we just got in our car and took off…

But now it was rush hour in LA. Have you ever driven on a Los Angeles freeway at rush hour? LA freeways have 8 lanes going each way and cars are all bumper to bumper. It took 2 hours to get to the hotel which was usually 30 minutes away.

Once at the hotel, we called our son and said we will not be coming over tonight because I needed a really BIG vodka on the rocks…

Unfortunately these days, you have to be ready for the unexpected at all times but to shoot at TSA agents and people trying to board planes in a crowded airport takes the stress of flying to a new level.

EVEN U.S. EVANGELICALS ARE FOLLOWING POPE FRANCIS' LEAD...

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal under “Generation Gap” caught my eye: EVENGELICAL LEADER PREACHES A PULLBACK FROM POLITICS, CULTURE WARS by Neil King, Jr. (October 22, 2013).

In the near past, Evangelicals were all about screaming against abortion, gay marriage and for prayer in schools and other unconstitutional issues.

There are now new voices in the SOUTHERN BAPTIST CONVENTION such as Russell Moore of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission.

He, like Pope Francis wants to get away from the political and cultural battle going on and concentrate on INCLUSIVENESS and not EXCLUSIVENESS.

This is happening mainly because young people are progressive thinking and all about inclusiveness and are leaving these mainstream churches in droves; if the Catholic Church and the Evangelicals (Southern Baptists) want to survive into the near future, they need to change their tone and their emphasis.

I find this especially interesting because even though church dogma still remains in opposition to homosexuality, gay marriage, abortion and in the Catholic Church, contraception, it has to be de-emphasized as in not of fundamental importance as far as the human race is concerned.

People are practicing their lives as they see fit and if religion stands in opposition to what normal people think and practice in their daily lives, than those religions will die; if no one is listening who are you preaching to…

We are truly living in historical times…

DETROIT ARCHBISHOP: For president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops?

Just read a report that Detroit Archbishop Allen Vigneron is a candidate for president of the U.S. CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS.

This organization has been hell bent on challenging Obamacare because of concerns about the insurance covering contraception and abortion.

The president of this bishop’s conference would be the go-to person for Pope Francis when it came to promoting the pope’s vision in the United States.

The problem is that Pope Francis has already come out strongly about letting issues on contraception and abortion and gay marriage GO and concentrating on the real mission of the Catholic Church and that is to help Catholics all around the world in managing their earthly lives and NOT keep telling them what the hell they should or should not do!

Vigneron has been a disappointment because he is far from progressive and more like regressive after Benedict and so if he does get elected, will he go against the will of Pope Francis who is a definite progressive?

Or will the conference elect someone a little more progressive (if one exists) and more in tune with the pope?

These are interesting times…

UAW at VW: Workers fighting back!

Updating the UAW’s attempt to unionize VW in Chattanooga, TN we now have a suit filed with the NLRB (National Labor Relations Board) that VW is trying to force workers at their plant in Chattanooga to join the UAW or not get the chance to build the next SUV (which will go to Mexico if the workers don’t cooperate).

You may be wondering why an auto manufacturer would actually encourage UNIONIZATION at its facilities. Well the Germans are different and the strong German auto unions are the ones pushing for unionization in America.

This is a bit more complicated than it seems since in Germany the factories have WORKER COUNCILs which is different from what we have here which are UNION SHOPS where the UAW controls everything. I tried to explain that difference in a previous blog.

Anyway, workers at the VW plant in Chattanooga filed a complaint with the NLRB accusing senior managers at VW from “hinting” that they could lose future products to Mexico if they don’t play ball with the UAW. This appeal is backed by the NATIONAL RIGHT TO WORK FOUNDATION.

The problem with filing a complaint to the NLRB is that the NLRB is a union lackey even if it claims to be impartial in labor disputes.

If VW was discouraging workers from joining the UAW all hell would break loose at the NLRB but the opposite will not even get the NLRB to answer the phone.

I am so glad that someone there is battling the UAW takeover of the plant and not just letting them waltz in using their deceptive tactics.

CONFEDERATE MONUMENTS: Stay or Go...
