VAGINA MANGER: War on Women is on...

More Catholic outrage to report on… I was watching the Daily Show with John Stewart which I highly recommend to people that watch too much FOX bullshit news, when he went on a rant about the WAR ON WOMEN that Fox ignores but keeps pushing the war of Christmas, War on religion, War on Christianity but never a War on Women when there is absolute proof that the Republicans want to put women where they belong; under men’s heels.

One of the BIG issues on the War on Women is all the state laws that are being passed by the Republicans that mandate extremely invasive procedures for women seeking a “LEGAL” abortion even though the procedures have nothing to do with the abortion but are designed to intimidate the women and punish them physically for seeking an abortion in the first place.

One picture that Stewart showed was of a naked woman with her legs spread and a small nativity scene / statue blocking her vagina; a “vagina manger” so to speak.

For that the Catholic League is threatening to boycott the show’s advertisers which are many if he does not apologize. He probably will apologize even though he should demand the Catholic Church apologize for all their sins that are much worst than displaying an image with a message.

The “Vagina Manger” is the same as wearing a religious medal or a crucifix for protection from evil. Since Republicans with the blessing of the Catholic Church deem it appropriate to perform unnecessary, punitive physical invasions of the female body such as that of a “transvaginal ultrasound” then why not put a religious symbol at the site of the invasion as a means of protection…wonder what MARY would say about that?

It is so fucking HYPOCRITICAL of the Catholic Church as well as all the right wing twits at FOX to spin the news the way they do yet object when someone points out their goddamn hypocrisy.

I will keep watching the DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART as I have been for years BUT now I will make it a point to support all his advertisers!!!

U.S. NUNS VS. VATICAN; Kick the Pope's ass sisters...

I was wondering if the Vatican was sleeping or was it about to give me some more food for thought and they did not disappoint…VATICAN ORDERS CRACKDOWN ON ‘RADICAL’ NUNS IN THE U.S.

I have been taught by nuns from grade school through high school and most of those nuns I do not hold in any regard but a few, I hold in the highest regard especially my chorale teacher in high school that made my days there just so much more enjoyable (she has since left the order) and a chubby nun that taught me advanced English because she dared to stand up to the order when they banned books she thought we all should read.

So I guess my favorite nuns were those that stood up for what they thought was right and proper and not for what they were told was right and proper and so it is not a surprise that I will cheer today’s nuns in their efforts to change the way the old farts in the Vatican think and act.

The LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE OF WOMEN RELIGIOUS represents some 57,000 catholic nuns in the U.S. and this is the group that has drawn the Vatican’s ire.

I think what prompted all this is the fact that the nuns did not agree with the bishops when the bishops attacked Obama’s healthcare plan and especially his contraceptives directive that mandated insurance plans to cover contraceptive expenses. (See my previous blog on that issue).

Some of the Vatican charges include “they take a position not in agreement with the church’s teaching on human sexuality” and “a prevalence of certain radical feminist themes incompatible with the Catholic faith” and “undermining Roman Catholic teachings on homosexuality and remaining silent on the issue of abortion and euthanasia”.

Bishops are trying to get them back into convents and into flying nun costumes and to bow to their authority while  Sister Sandra M. Schneiders, professor of theology at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley says “Whereas we are religious, we’re living the life of total dedication to Christ, and out of that flows a profound concern for the good of humanity. So our vision of our lives, and their vision of us as a work force, is just not on the same planet.”

I think Sister Schneiders speaks volumes about the difference between nuns and the old geezers in the Vatican; they care about humanity but they just care about being in-charge and telling you stupid ideas about how to behave as humans.

It is becoming more evident on a daily basis that the Vatican is losing its grip on Catholics worldwide but especially in the United States because their ideas and so called teachings are INCOMPATIBLE with how humans behave and need to behave.

The recent attention being paid to the rise of women as a force in our world is mainly because men have so fucked up the world that women need to step up and start helping bring sanity back.

I think the nuns, as women first, have a natural instinct to nurture and not just to order around and punish. They understand the role of women in society and know that men pretending that they know what is best for women and for that matter, families in general, is just a bunch of bullshit and masculine ego and the Vatican is very full of both. If nuns had power in the church, we would not have had the sexual abuse that went on for decades and included thousands of innocent children; they would have cut their balls of as soon as they heard of the crimes and not move those predators to other parishes to abuse new children.

The Vatican has lost its leadership role in the church and in society as a whole; they just don’t get it anymore and they need to be put out to pasture.

I hope American Catholics will gather in support of the U.S. nuns as the Vatican tries to make them their obedient slaves once again; get your own fucking tea your eminence!

CHARLEVOIX, MI: Getting Condo ready for the season...

We went up to our condo in Charlevoix, Michigan over the weekend. Wanted to see how everything weathered the mild winter we had and get the place ready for the new season. And it was also our 41st wedding anniversary so why not get away.

Most places Up North don’t really open till May but there were a few shops open and some restaurants also and there were NO crowds like those in the Summer where you cannot find parking and can barely walk along the sidewalk.

We explored the Walloon Lake region in search of Ernest Hemmingway’s summer cottage where he spent many summers. I guess the cottage is privately owned and not really a tourist destination so it was not clearly marked but we saw the store he frequented; it was closed also.

I am including some pictures of Little Traverse Bay on the way to Petoskey, Michigan where  Bay View development of very expensive homes and condos is located.

Check out the water color!

TRAYVON CASE: Becoming a circus...

George Zimmerman, the guy who shot Trayvon Martin, supposedly in self-defense, has finally been arrested and charged with second degree murder after initially being released by the police who decided the shooting was in self-defense and therefore justified.

There are problems with this case on a number of levels.

Zimmerman, as part of a neighborhood watch program, was “patrolling” the neighborhood, looking for suspicious characters, which is legitimate BUT he had a gun which is not AND he was actually “following” Trayvon when all he was obligated to do was to “report” a suspicious character in the neighborhood.

Trayvon noticed he was being followed / stalked and instead of running away, confronted his potential attacker and fearing for his life, attacked his stalker who then shot him in the chest and killed him.

Was Zimmerman breaking the law by stalking a suspicious character? He probably broke the rules of the Neighborhood Watch association which prohibits the carrying of a weapon and prohibits stalking but other than that…I don’t think so.

Was Trayvon breaking the law by attacking Zimmerman? In his own mind, he was defending himself from a possible attacker but to the police that came upon the scene, he was the attacker and Zimmerman was the victim and he was justified in protecting himself.

So here we have one of those surreal situations that you see on TV except in this one, a young man really died and people want that death explained and they want who ever caused that death to be punished so…

Did the police do something wrong? If they followed procedure for incidents like this one, they are in the clear.

After much national protest which seemed to suggest race as an issue (which it was not) a special prosecutor has charged Zimmerman with 2nd degree murder and had him arrested.

The prosecutor is obviously playing to the national audience because 2nd degree murder is a big stretch even for those not versed in law; manslaughter seems the more appropriate charge but it all depends on what the prosecutor will try to prove was Zimmerman’s intent.

This will be like the O.J. Simpson trial but in reverse. OJ killed his girlfriend and her friend without any question but a racist jury, high priced defense attorneys and sloppy detective work let a murderer go free.

Zimmerman may have made some mistakes but he did not aim to kill anyone but a jury aware of what the country expect from them and a prosecutor willing to do anything and everything to win this case and become famous, may put a man in jail for something he should not have been charged with.

I guess the problem I am having with all this is how did all this turn into such a fucking circus?

TENNESSEE IS AGAIN THE MONKEY STATE

The state of Tennessee is about to make a monkey out of itself. In 1925, the state held its infamous “Monkey Trial” where a teacher was tried in court for teaching the subject of “evolution” which had just been outlawed in the state; the statute was not repealed until 1967.

Read: “Tennessee is lab for national clash over science class”, Cameron McWhirter, Wall Street Journal, 4-10-2012.

Today, the state is about to pass another law which will allow science teachers to challenge theories such as evolution and global warming among others that Tennessee religious conservatives find objectionable to their religious perception of earthly reality.

Many in the state fear that such a law would not only “miseducate” students but would damage the state’s national and international reputation and dub people living there as a backward bunch of hicks living in the dark ages…and that would be true.

There is no rationale for the law to be enacted but only to once again inject religion into the teaching of science which even the Catholic Church does not advocate because it challenges not only reason but proven science.

The law allows teachers to challenge the theory of evolution because some people to this very day, believe the word “theory” means something that is yet unproven. Well then it is unfortunate that the word “theory” is so misunderstood in our English language and its use should be explained much better in school.

We have “music theory” as well as the “theory of gravity”; all theories that are “fact” or better yet, a set of principles. If the theory of gravity was a speculation, we would not have been able to go into space – get it?

Evolution presents a challenge to creationism and the absurd idea of “intelligent design”. Why do I say the idea of intelligent design is absurd; because those that actually know something about our earth know that thousands of species have perished throughout the ages because they were so unfit to survive living on earth that they perished quickly? This means that if you believe that all living things were “intelligently” designed by our creator, you have to also believe that HE experimented a lot with design because most of his designs were downright stupid and did not work!

Evolution challenges creationism because it challenges the Bible story as to how and when things happened on earth. No intelligent person can challenge the time span of the creation of earth and the creatures upon it because there is incontrovertible proof of the real age of the earth.

One also has to wonder about people believing in the “inerrancy” of the Bible as well as the idea that each word printed in the Bible is the word of God. Most people don’t know that there is no “original” copy of the stories in the Bible and that the translations that were produced throughout history have been based on other translations to the point that what we have today is a translation of a translation of a translation…ad infinitum.

Also adding to the absurdity of the idea that every word in the Bible is the authentic word of God is the fact that many of those copies that we have were copied by hand, by humans who introduced errors or variations EACH time a copy was made and there are “thousands” of copies of copies.

My favorite point about Bible translations is the fact that ISAIAH 7:14 in the Old Testament was used by early Christians as a prediction of the birth of Jesus. The original Hebrew wording stated that a “young” woman would give birth to the eventual messiah.

Well the Gospel of Mathew mistranslates from the original of “young woman” to “virgin woman” and the mistake was caught early on by St. Jerome who was translating from the original Hebrew but St. Augustine instructed him to leave the passage as “virgin” since that was what everyone has learned to believe so why muddy the waters.

Jesus had brothers and sisters that came before him (as per the Bible) so the virginity claim seems pretty absurd but hey, tradition is tradition even if based on an error and that is why people who hold those beliefs about the inerrancy of the Bible are to me, just plain ignorant about their own faith and where it comes from.

Allowing state legislatures to legislate their religious beliefs into the education of children should be made unconstitutional and actually is but the people in those states are trying to go around the constitutionality of the issue by using confusing language and that should be stopped dead in its tracks.

This is the problem with electing conservative Republicans; they carry the Dark Age disease of pure ignorance of the world around them even if they are better at handling money than the Democrats.

We cannot have only two options to choose from when electing officials; we need a third option, a party that practices financial responsibility but is enlightened when it comes to our culture and society.

The fact that we are even talking about this issue at this time in our history makes us all look and act like a bunch of monkeys…apologies to the monkeys.

Easter at the Szyszkos...

Easter 2012 was a pretty joyous occasion. The weather was just OK with plenty of sunshine but a 40 mph wind that made things a little unpleasant. Most of the family made it and we basically followed the traditions which are more secular these days.

In the old days we had our Easter baskets blessed at the church but it is hard to find a church that does that anymore and we used to go to “morning mass” which has also fallen by the wayside but my brother and sister still observe church services with their families.

The pictures show females inside catching up after a long winter while the males are outside having their beers and talking about what males talk about.

The kids were inside and out and since we have many different levels of kids ( 2 to 18 ) there all have their favorite games to play.

The bigger kids hide the eggs and help the smaller ones find the eggs.

All kids participate in our traditional EGG WARS with the strongest egg declared the winner…boy do we waste a lot of eggs.

Then of course we have great food at Easter with smoked and fresh kielbasa, lots of ham, asparagus and spring potatoes, hard boiled eggs marinated in beet juice, butter lambs, variety of breads and a ton of deserts. This year my niece brought in a variety of chocolate bars that her brother-in-law produces in Vietnam of all places and is trying to introduce them into the US. If you run into MAROU chocolates; it is a member of the family that makes them.

RELIGION IN THE MILITARY: Secularism & atheism recognized...

Found a very interesting article from the Associated Press titled: ARMY ATHEISTS SEEKING ACCEPTANCE SPREAD MESSAGE AT BASE CARNIVAL.

I actually have been following this trend for some time now. In the past, no one in the military admitted to not being religious and just played along with the rest. We had chaplains of each faith as officers serving in the military and one could go to a religious service on Sundays, if they were available where you were stationed.

In recent times, military chaplains were caught in “aggressive proselytizing” which means these chaplains who were also “officers” were pushing or ordering regular GIs who are not officers, into religions and religious practices they did not want. The military has since then made rules against pushing soldiers into religion; most officers that were accused of doing so were mostly fundamentalist Christians.

Military bases also, from time to time, allowed religious groups to hold picnics and other events specifically for religious purposes and in some cases, soldiers were commanded to attend whether they wanted to or not.

Recently, that practice was challenged on legal and ethical grounds by various groups representing secularism and humanism and one in particular that I belong to called: AMERICANS UNITED FOR SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE which is actually headed by a Protestant minister, Barry Lynn.

This group of religious and non religious people acts against violations of the Constitutional mandate to keep religion and government separate and because the US military is a branch of our government, it should have nothing to do with religious proselytizing or forcing religion on soldiers under their command.

The fact that army atheists were allowed to have their own staged event on an army base (in this case Ft. Bragg, NC) is historic and long over due. The event ROCK BEYOND BELIEF was a carnival with normal carnival fare with information booths about secular groups and performers that sang about secularism, etc.

This was historic because for the first time ever the military recognized soldiers that are atheist, secularists or just don’t consider themselves religious, as a distinct faith group like religious groups are.

This is a giant step for our civilization and our specific culture and I hope it will serve as an example around the world that you don’t have to belong to a specific religious group to be recognized as an individual and as a member of society in good standing.

CONFEDERATE MONUMENTS: Stay or Go...

Another subject that I feel needs some clarification because it is so divisive among us is the issue of Confederate Monuments, why they ...
