2009: Things don't look so good!

Happy New Year 2009.

Here we go again. Been to quite a few gatherings over the holidays so I heard what people were talking about, what people were most concerned about.

The economy is topic one but in my circle of family and friends, no one was actually suffering from our economic downturn but they were concerned as to the near future and the widening circle of people that WILL be affected by the worsening economy. Most thought that their economic lives will be affected to some degree and they were worried as to the degree.

Locally, our Arab community was up in arms over the Israeli bombing and now incursion into the Gaza Strip. My wife was incensed that the rockets Hamas was firing into Israel only killed one person while the Jewish military had already killed 400 Arabs, some of them innocent civilians.

I tried to explain to her that this was not about body count parity; this was about Hamas continually firing rockets into Israel with increasing accuracy and range. Did you want Israel to wait till they get nuclear devices for their rockets?

I also explained that this conflict could have been solved and settled years ago if only people would be willing to accept reality and not dreams. Israel is not going to disappear. The Palestinians will never get their land back. A Palestinian homeland is a possibility in the West Bank. Peace is possible. All things are possible IF the Palestinians face reality.

But it appears that Hamas and others are making too much money during this never ending conflict and I think they hate to lose such a nice livelihood; how else can you explain this irrational behavior of constantly taunting the Israelis.

In Iraq, the suicide bombings continue as the U.S. relinquishes its military control of key areas of the country. Mark my words, a bloody civil war has been predicted and is just waiting for the last U.S. soldier to pull out.

Afghanistan is worse than ever and more of our troops are leaving Iraq for Afghanistan. This problem could have been dealt with years ago when we had bin Laden and Al Qaeda cornered and primed for eradication. But that is when our dear president said we are off to invade Iraq so let bin Laden go and let him regroup and grow in strength while we try to make Iraq into a democracy.

And as Bush fiddled while Iraq was burning, ole’ Vlad Putin consolidated his power and started Russia on the road BACK to dictatorial super power.

2009 is not going to be a good year for the U.S. and for the world. If you haven’t noticed, manufacturing has tumbled on a global level because nobody is buying anything. As manufacturing jobs are lost, fewer and fewer people will have money to buy anything but bare necessities and the cycle will be in full swing.

We have already noticed that home break-ins, bank robberies and other crimes for money are on the increase; we are entering dangerous times.

But enough depressing reality; lets go watch some football – the playoffs are on!!!
