IN GOD WE TRUST AD: Response to a response...

In a response to my blog: “IN GOD WE TRUST AD: Very misleading and expensive” Hobby Lobby, the company sponsoring the ad, said it was saddened that some of the responses to their ad was “pure venom”.

The full page ad ran in many if not most, newspapers in the country so it was bound to attract some commentary, some maybe not so nice because the blogosphere gives many a voice that they probably would never use in public.

The Hobby Lobby response was well written and had some interesting points.

They are correct in stating that when the First Amendment was written, the country was basically a mish mash of Christianities, many at each other’s throats; they were escaping religious persecution in Europe but were willing to persecute other denominations here in the land of the free…so much for brotherly love and other so called Christian virtues.

The First Amendment was designed to keep these Christianities from taking control of state governments and making states exclusively Catholic or Methodist, etc. best way was to make sure government(s) never sided with any specific religion; Separation of Church & State.

The Founding Fathers did however have a healthy distrust of organized religion and the damage it has done throughout history, especially in Europe; they were determined that would not happen here.

Please remember that in the Treaty with the Barbary Pirates (Muslim), Congress specifically stated that the United States was not a Christian nation and therefore not an enemy of non-Christian nations.

The Hobby Lobby makes a point of saying that at our founding, most people were some sort of Christians and Christian values predominated in the birth of this nation and that many today feel we are moving away from those Christian values.

These values such as honesty, purity, faithfulness and morality, they posit must be based on an authority other than our own and here ladies & gentlemen, is the rub.

Many today, feel that values and virtues are not the exclusive property of some God; they feel that we as humans, living in our social groupings are the exclusive masters of the values and virtues we hold dearest and we practice morality as something expected of fellow humans and as such humanists, we owe it to the rest of our brothers and sisters to behave in a humane fashion and not because we are commanded by some God to behave that way under penalty of eternal damnation.

The Hobby Lobby feels that we have slipped morally as a nation because we have removed God from the public square. I feel that God does not belong in the public square but in a private square where those who wish to practice their beliefs can entertain God in their midst only and not where God is not wanted.

This is exactly what the Founding Fathers meant when they created the policy of the Separation of Church & State; they wanted God in only places where he is wanted and not forced on the public at large.

The foundation of this country is strong and will remain strong only if we don’t allow any one group to take control of the public square and yes that includes the rabid Christians who feel they know how everyone should behave; au contraire, many so called Christians are some of the worst offenders of our societal rules of accepted behavior.

Please also note that the non-believing or non-religious population of this country is growing rapidly and to force them to accept Christian practices like prayers to a Christian God is not only unconstitutional and a violation of our freedoms but is harkening back to the days of darkness that saw religious persecution running rampant across Europe forcing many to seek refuge in the land of the free; the United States of America; lets not go backwards.

PROMETHEUS THE MOVIE: Not what I expected...

Saw the movie PROMETHEUS, a sci-fi flick that had fantastic previews and was supposed to be a precursor to the ALIEN saga.

I will have to admit that even with fantastic graphics, I was not impressed.

I guess I was expecting a story here; a fantastic tale but somewhat believable and coherent after all we were looking for our creators in this movie.

The actual story has been written and re-written a number of times so you would think the end product would be quite good but no.

I may be in the minority because many people tell me that this film was the best they have ever seen and even “some” professional reviewers agreed that it was fantastic but not all…

A noticeable flaw was the reckless way this team operated in a planet they have never been to and confronting something that could have been dangerous. This devil-may-care attitude just does not jive with serious space exploration and therefore makes it so much less believable.

This story could have had enormous potential with the juxtaposition of earthly faith in God and the discovery of humankind’s creators but that opportunity was blown by weak plot development and an emphasis on stale old bits like when the female lead has a creature growing inside her and has it cut out of her by an operating machine…exiting and suspenseful but has been done too many times.

The story did not connect any dots either as when the famous ALIEN creature emerged from another creature at the end with everyone asking where in the hell did it come from and from who…the creature from the woman’s stomach who did not look at all like the Alien we recognize but some octopus looking slimy thing.

In the end, the female lead took off looking for where our creators came from…a sequel?

I will admit that I liked one of the characters who was a humanoid (robot); he will go into the sequel since he survived even though headless.

I maybe missing something here since there is such a wide division between people that adore this movie and those that were totally disappointed in it…I will have to read more opinions…

IN GOD WE TRUST AD: Very misleading and expensive!

Practically every paper I picked up on this 4th of July holiday week had a full page ad with a bunch of writing but a big headline in the middle: In God We Trust.

It was hard to really know who wrote all this and who paid for this ad but it seems a few stores like Hobby Lobby, Hemispheres and Mardel Stores in Oklahoma City paid for the ad and NEED HIM MINISTRY was behind the message.

The message was a bunch of quotes from historical American figures from presidents to congressmen, educators, Founding Fathers and Supreme Court justices all declaring America as a Christian nation…

The 4th of July timing is good but the message is very flawed; we are not a Christian nation and we were never a Christian nation and in fact, it would be unconstitutional for us to be a Christian nation because our Founding Fathers made sure we as a nation, never declare any religion as our national religion as per our FIRST AMENDMENT.

This principle established by our Founding Fathers in our Constitution has served us very well throughout our history. Our Founding Fathers knew the terrible role played by religions in various countries where the ruler or government declared for a specific religion.

Hell, this country was colonized by religious people escaping persecution for their religious beliefs and practices from their home countries so they did not want to go to a country that would again persecute religious people that did not fit into the declared national religion SO WE HAVE PROHIBITED OUR GOVERNMENT FROM EVER FORMING A NATIONAL RELIGION.

In fact, Congress when ratifying a treaty with the Barbary Pirates specifically stated that the United States is absolutely NOT a Christian nation…look it up.

So why would these obviously religious nuts try to mislead people into thinking we are a Christian nation? ... because they want to build a Christian nation. They want our government to break the law and declare their allegiance to Christianity and persecute all other religions out of the country.

In other words, they want us to defy our Founding Fathers and our Constitution and create a Christian state.

They make a convincing argument by quoting all these historic figures saying something about how Christian we all are. Well that is true, at the founding of this country, many immigrants were Christian but they were all different kinds of Christians escaping from other Christians that persecuted them in their homeland.

So yes, we adopted certain Christian symbols into our greater society but make no mistake about it, the First Amendment was added to the Constitution to forbid our government from declaring FOR any religion even though many members of the government at that time were some sort of Christian.

Actually, many Founding Fathers were DEISTS and believed in a creator God but NOT in religion.
Don’t let religious fools fool you…know your facts…I will remind you of them!

4th of July: some thoughts...

Happy 4th of July…Independence Day…wish the temperature was not 100°F…not so pleasant to sit outside…hopefully temps will go down with darkness and fireworks!

I used to put on a fireworks extravaganza for many years. Went to Ohio or Indiana to buy tons of fireworks and had the whole family over and a bunch of close friends. When my kids left home, my zest for having these shows dwindled and my age probably had something to do with that too.

Now it is legal to buy those fireworks in Michigan but the gusto is gone…I will still set off fireworks but to a lesser crowd; my mother and the grandkids.

I noticed our newspapers tried to remind people of what the day stands for. It printed the entire Declaration of Independence on one page knowing that many Americans are history illiterate; thank our schools for that.

The newspapers also showed fresh immigrants being sworn in as new citizens of our great land. People are still drawn to the land of opportunity for just that, opportunity which they cannot find anywhere else.

We are a land of immigrants but I still have to remind people of that; many feel that if they were born here they are not immigrants, forgetting that someone from their family was an immigrant at some point in time; only native American Indians are considered non-immigrant Americans but even the Indians came from their distant forefathers who crossed the Bering Strait over a land bridge that existed then and into Alaska and down the coast all the way to the tip of Argentina.

My small subdivision organized a parade of people on bikes dressed for the occasion but only a few showed up…maybe the heat kept them away.

If it was not for the brave men and women who fought in the American Revolution; we would still be part of the British Empire.

I get a little upset when today’s soldiers are referred as fighters and protectors of our freedoms. The soldiers who fought Britain were freedom fighters and soldiers who fought in WWII did so to defend our freedoms from Nazis and Japs who would invade us and take those freedoms away.

Vietnam era soldiers like me did not fight to defend our freedoms; we were told that we were stopping the march of Communism in the world because the goal of Communists everywhere was to wipe out capitalism and replace it with a Communist dictatorship which would ban all freedoms… so maybe we were kinda’ fighting to stop the encroachment of Communism but I don’t think we ever thought that Communists were going to invade us; I guess we were fighting for someone else’s freedoms.

Today’s soldiers are soldiers because they want to be soldiers and were not drafted like the soldiers of the Vietnam era; they joined of their own free will because they wanted to.

The invasion of Iraq by President Bush had nothing to do with preserving our freedoms and our way of life; it was Bush’s campaign to transform Islamic states into democracies…it was a nice cause if it wasn’t for all the dead and wounded and still no democracy.

Afghanistan was a reaction to the bombing of our Trade Center in New York by the al-Qaeda terror organization. Combating terrorists who attacked us and planned to do it over and over again was definitely fighting to protect our country from invaders that wanted to kill Americans.

Fighting the Taliban who were sort of partners of al-Qaeda did not have the same patriotic mission ideal but was similar to Vietnam where we wanted the country to become a democracy and enjoy freedoms that we enjoy.

I have nothing against the United States fighting evil around the world and helping other people gain the freedoms that we have enjoyed for all these years but that does not make those American soldiers defenders of our freedoms but professional soldiers in a professional army doing the bidding of our government.

The real danger to our freedoms actually comes from within. Religious nut cases like the Republicans are always looking to curtail our freedoms including the freedom FROM religion and the freedom to choose how to live our lives.

Our Founding Fathers were great men with vision and brave freedom fighters and we should show them the respect and gratitude every 4th of July for the great country they founded and we should continue to fight to retain the freedoms they gave us from those who would take them away even if they are fellow Americans.

LACKLAND AFB: Sex Scandal?

I was disappointed but I suppose, not totally surprised that the Air Force has expanded its probe into sexual misconduct by drill instructors (DIs) or training Instructors (TIs) at Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio, Tx where I took my basic training in 1966.

I was one of many scared 18 year olds that came to the base for some much expedited basic training; expedited because there was not time to waste on training, get them into the ranks now!

Each group of trainees was assigned one or more instructors who were tough as nails because they had to be. They were basically gods that had to be obeyed completely; if he said jump, you jumped, no matter what.

I equate these instructors with other authority figures like priests and coaches who have also been accused of abusing their authority and sexually molesting scared young boys or in this case, scared young women.

I remember seeing females in training but they were usually assigned to female instructors. I guess many things have changed there since 1966 but the principle remains the same; train them but don’t abuse or molest them.

I am not naïve to think that no abuse took place when I was at Lackland but I guess now, women are not afraid to come forward and 31 lodged complaints of abuse from molestation to rape.

It is a sad commentary on our society where people in power tend to use that power for doing bad things and in many cases, they are allowed to abuse their power by institutions that they work for and that includes the Air Force, Penn State, Congress, Corporations and of course, the Vatican.

I guess this Air Force abuse bothers me a little more because I can relate to those scared 18 year olds that have never been far away from home or their parents and are thrust into a world of despicable wolves.

CATHOLIC CONTRACEPTION issue in local paper...

Sunday, July 01, 2012

To:         The Canton Observer
Re:         “Attacking religious freedom”, Letter to the Editor, June 28, 2012

In the letter “Attacking religious freedom”, June 28, it appears that  yet another letter writer seems to confuse our First Amendment right to practice whatever religious faith we wish without any government interference with imposing our religious beliefs and practices on others who may not share our beliefs and practices.

Catholic institutions service Catholics and non-Catholics. They also employ Catholics and non-Catholics and therefore are public institutions run by Catholics. As institutions that service and employ a variety of individuals, some who may even be non-religious, they are bound to respect and follow the laws of the land that govern such institutions.

The new Obama health insurance rules governing certain employers mandate coverage for specific health related issues which happen to include paying for contraception (birth control pills, etc.).

Catholic leaders preach against any and all means of contraception and have for some time now and that is well and good as long as they demand obedience to their views from their fellow Catholics and not of non-Catholics or non-religious individuals  and that is why churches such as the Catholic Church,  are not bound by rules such as the new healthcare rules but as institutions that cater to and employ non-Catholics, they are bound by the same rules and regulations as all similar institutions are.

To accuse President Obama of attacking religious liberty in general and the Catholic Church in particular, is patently absurd and speaks to the ignorance and confusion of many people who believe their religious freedoms are under attack while at the same time do not recognize the freedom of others not to be bound by someone else’s religious beliefs; yes freedom from religion is a right!

The Catholic bishops, who are behind this campaign of misinformation and blatant deceit against the Obama administration, should concentrate on convincing their own membership to follow their pronouncements on contraception since most do not, instead of trying to force their beliefs on non-Catholics or Catholics that do not subscribe to or follow the Vatican’s unrealistic and misguided views on contraception.

CONFEDERATE MONUMENTS: Stay or Go...

Another subject that I feel needs some clarification because it is so divisive among us is the issue of Confederate Monuments, why they ...
