President Obama got a lot of people ticked off in Michigan when he said he will allow states to set their own auto emission and gas mileage requirements. He said something similar when he was running for president; he took Detroit to task for dragging their feet on better fuel economy even though he knew that stance would not win him votes in Michigan.
Michigan Senator John Dingell was the key politician that did the auto companies bidding in blocking all governmental requirements for better fuel economy standards; he finally got his ass kicked off the committee chair by Waxman after many, many years of blocking needed legislation.
Now I am sure we don’t want every state in the union having different emission and fuel economy standards but taking California’s requirements and making them national would be a sensible and workable idea.
The UAW and auto companies are mad - so be it - they should have done this years ago. Is it a bad time imposing new standards on the auto industry? Well, it is an interesting time but no time like the present to get things right and if the US auto companies want to compete in the global market or even in the U.S. market, they better have products that can compete and the gas guzzlers they have right now just will not do the job.
Detroit - stop your whining and get to work and YES, you also need to pay for your sins just like everybody else does.
