GERMAN CHRISTMAS MARKET IN BIRMINGHAM, MI.

This Sunday was cold as hell but we went to the German Christmas Market in Birmingham; something I never experienced…in this country.

I have been traveling to Dusseldorf, Germany in late November for many years; we attend a very large medical exhibition show where people from all over the world meet to see the latest medical stuff.

Anyway, usually at this time in Dusseldorf, the town is festooned for Christmas and many people gather in the evening to party (outside). People drink hot spiced wine and eat huge potato pancakes (outside) and shop for gifts; it is called a CHRISTKINDES MARKET.

I was surprised when my daughter said her town (Birmingham) was having a German Christmas market. We all bundled up including her in-laws from Scotland and headed for the market.

It was really too cold for man or beast but we had to at least see it. Yes, the had the hot wine which we call GLUE WINE but in German it is GLÜHWEIN and is usually translated as GLOW WINE but it looks like GLUE to us. The wine was very good and perfect for the cold.

They also had potato pancakes which we got but they were a little thicker and smaller than the ones I had in Germany but still pretty good.

There were tents with vendors selling all sorts of stuff but like I said, it was too cold to linger for too long plus my grandson’s cheeks were turning purple. As for the youngest grandson; he’s too fat to get cold.

  1. Want to make the same point really, been to the German Christmas markets in "Germany" recently. Was quite a fascinating experience but I notice more cities in the UK are organising these now as well. For example, the christmas market in Birmingham, UK have the Frankfurt Christmas Market. Love this time of the year!

  2. Well at least this year it'll be a white Christmas - the roads are pretty bad to get up to Brum though so not sure we'll make it this year - went a few years back and it was pretty good though not a patch on the original over in Frankfurt if you get chance to see it. Actually, I think its the same organisers who do the Christmas market in Frankfurt (which you can tell from that link I've been a few times before!) and the one in Birmingham.
