THE AFGHAN WAR: Is it time to go?

I heard something interesting on the news last night; Democrats actually voting against a bill funding the Afghan War?

My wife, who is a peace activist and is against any and all wars was pleasantly surprised especially when she was saying enough is enough – but lets take a closer look.

The Republicans are screaming about the rising deficit and calling for spending cuts but it was Bush that started an unnecessary war in Iraq and spent billions and billions of dollars (which are unaccounted for according to a recent audit) and wasted thousands of lives for absolutely nothing.

Little is reported about Iraq these days but as I have blogged many, many times before, people are still being slaughtered there, there is no de facto government there so what the hell have we accomplished there? BUT the billions of dollars spent there is somehow conveniently forgotten by the Republicans.

The Afghan War which was actually a justified war that was abandoned by crazy-ass Bush when it was nearly won is a different matter; it may not (as Michael Steele so famously said) may not be winnable and the latest leaks on WIKILEAKS.com show how badly the war is being conducted.

Originally, we went after the al-Qaeda but now we are fighting the Taliban while bin Laden hides in Pakistan. Yes, the war is costing us billions and billions as we scream for deficit reduction. Maybe we cannot afford the war?

What is it that we are trying to achieve? The government is corrupt, Taliban will not go away, people are sick and tired of war and the country is ungovernable plus we need the money here!

This may be a second Vietnam. Can we fight the war using only drones piloted by someone sitting at a video screen in Kansas? Maybe the boots on the ground concept is not such a good idea.

It appears people are starting to question the benefits of continuing the war there and maybe the questioning comes at a good time.
