Well you knew that the news of the Vatican
attacking or shall I say, condemning a book written by a nun about sexual ethics
would pique my interest big time…
The book is: JUST LOVE: A FRAMEWORK FOR CHRISTIAN ETHICS by
Sister Margaret Farley.
A little about Sister Margaret; She was a professor of
Christian Ethics 1971-2007 at the Yale School of Divinity. She is past
president of the Society of Christian Ethics and the Catholic Theological
Society of America. She has won many awards and is recognized as one of the
foremost and preeminent Christian ethicists in America
but the Vatican
spits on her book!
Just so you know, the word ETHIC(s) is a discipline dealing
with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation…a guiding
philosophy of conduct governing individuals as well as groups.
Sister Margaret said that she was only proposing A FRAMEWORK
FOR SEXUAL ETHICS THAT USES A CRITERIA OF JUSTICE IN EVALUATING SEXUAL
RELATIONS. That is pretty deep and will need some explanation…
She has said that she wrote the book to explore sexuality
via various religious traditions, theological resources and human experience.
The pope and the Vatican said the author has DEFECTIVE
UNDERSTANDING OF CATHOLIC THEOLOGY and she posed GRAVE HARM to the faithful as
reported by Nicole Winfield of the Associated Press.
The Vatican
went on to say that her book AFFIRMS POSITIONS THAT ARE IN DIRECT CONTRADICTION
WITH CATHOLIC TEACHING IN THE FIELD OF SEXUAL MORALITY.
In other words, she dared question what they have pronounced
on the issue of sexual morality and since their pronouncements come directly
from God, she is defying what God wants and commands and therefore needs to be
burnt at the stake (my dramatic interpretation).
And all this from a bunch of sexual deviates that have the
least amount of understanding on the subject of “normal” human sexuality…
although I have never encountered a nun speaking out on the subject before… I
would think they possess much more sensitivity to and compassion for mere
humans and their plight in life since they work among and with people and not
just dictate from a lofty throne.
My, my, I don’t think I have ever encountered such a state
of affairs. The new Vatican
war on nuns, on contraception, on Vatican II, etc. has me thinking that this
may be some sort of counteroffensive to restore its legitimacy as the voice of
God after having to defend itself against the debacle of the priestly sex
scandal cover-up which made them lose not only their legitimacy as God’s
spokesmen but their basic humanity and even a sense of basic decency.
I will explore more fully what the Vatican
objects to in Sister Margaret’s book on the flip side…
