I have been following the Vatican leaking scandal pretty
closely because it is a great story about the inner workings of the Vatican but
also to see how the pope and the Vatican handle the scandal since in today’s
world you can’t simply brush things under the carpet as the Vatican has been
doing for centuries.
I am also very interested in the effect it is having on
Catholics around the world and if perhaps these Vatican
shenanigans are finally making Catholics feel that a historic reform of their
religion’s leadership is something that must be seriously considered.
Today I have learned how the Vatican is trying to put a
different spin on the leaked documents scandal, as I knew they would…
Associated Press: VATICAN
SAYS LEAKS A VIOLATION OF TRUST, Nicole Winfield (June 2, 2012).
The pope is now saying that the stealing and leaking of
documents that deal with internal church governance also included documents or
letters written by people who (get ready for this) in writing to the pope
believed they were essentially SPEAKING BEFORE GOD.
The Vatican
is calling the theft and publication of private letters AN UNPRECEDENTEDLY
GRAVE MORAL ACT…UNJUSTIFIABLE UNDER ANY PRETEXT.
.
The first thing that caught my attention was the assertion
that speaking to the pope is basically, speaking to God. He did say that these
letter writers “believed” that they were speaking “before” God but hey,
semantics shmantics…
Now I have always said that the pope does consider himself
as a “representative” of God on earth and so do all Catholics but it still
sounds so arrogant when you actually hear it.
Many people who live in multi-religious families say that
there are many religions but they all lead to the same God…these people must be
the more progressive religious types because the religious people I know,
especially the Catholics, feel that their way is the only way.
The logical way to look at this is that all founders of
religions “invented” their own ideas of God and so can say whatever they want
about their God since he is their creation so the pope is not wrong in saying
he and god are best buds; it is his invention after all.
My problem here is that the pope and the Vatican is
playing the old diversion game; divert attention from the real crime to
something else until the hubbub dies down.
The leaked letters show a Vatican in chaos and reveal some
pretty bad actors at the Vatican that have done some pretty bad deeds but lets
not act on that, lets talk about how bad the act of leaking messages to god are
and how bad the leaker must be instead of how bad the contents of the leaked
documents make the pope and the Vatican look…smart and ingenious?
We are now getting word that the leaker(s) actually had the
best interest of the church in mind when they did their evil but necessary
deeds; they were trying to save the church from the bunch of criminals, sinners
and perverts that lead it.
I think somebody needs to make a movie out of this; something
in the line of the Starz series: THE BORGIAS. History does seem to repeat
itself and its happening in our own time…wow!
