Watching the events unfold in Egypt, you could swear it was a love fest with families walking about so the children would have some history to be part of, soldiers hugging the protestors, protesters eager to be interviewed by the foreign media…wow, if all revolutions could be just like this one.
Well you knew it could not last. Mubarak promised not to run for re-election but would remain as a caretaker president until new elections could be held in the fall. Well, that is not what the protestors had in mind; they wanted him gone now!
Just as many people in Egypt wanted Mubarak gone so they can start enjoying some freedom and some economic opportunities, there were also those that have prospered under Mubarak; to get elected, he did need supporters after all.
So those who will suffer if Mubarak leaves hired some thugs to break up the love fest and we saw that happening today. I don’t think the revolution will end like in Iran because it has come too far and the army will not let the pro-Mubarak hooligans harm the legitimate protestors but some violence is inevitable.
You will notice that in Jordan , King Abdullah who sat on his ass all these years while his people pined for change got into gear hoping he is not too late.
I bet the boys in Saudi Arabia are sweating some, hoping the revolution does not come to their land; a land from which they have prospered immensely and still the women there have no rights whatsoever.
History is in the making and I am loving it…
