Cannot help bashing Detroit
or in this case the Detroit City Council because what they do requires bashing
and maybe even eliminating the council altogether.
City government was so corrupt that members were thrown in
jail and the citizens of Detroit passed a new city charter that
they thought would eliminate this insidious state of corruption once and for
all.
One of the charter rules banned gifts to city officials and
employees so the council is placing on the November ballot a proposal that
would allow the council to establish what gifts, gratuities and other honoraria
officials and employees CAN receive, in effect invalidating the charter rule of
NO GIFTS.
Another rule banned former city employees from lobbying or
getting paid for services for one full year after their employment ended. The
council now has placed a proposal on the ballot allowing former employees to
enter into contracts with the city in the first year after ending their city
employment. What can I say about that but that it again invalidates a charter
rule?
Governor Snyder said “These amendments appear to signal a
retreat from the ethical standards set by the charter, and I cannot support
them” but since the governor has no power to prohibit what the council puts on
the ballot, the assholes on the council went ahead and put their proposals
invalidating established charter rules on the ballot.
Now you can tell me that the proposals put forth by the
council are to be voted on by the people of Detroit but why in the hell are
they putting proposals on the ballot that invalidate the people’s previous
vote?
Because the council thinks they can get away with it since
after all, this is Detroit and if they can get
the pastors of Detroit
to convince enough of their church members to vote for the proposals, the door
to corruption will be wide open again…does this even make sense to you?
The city charter is like the state constitution and should
not be monkeyed with because it then becomes the law and cannot be changed
easily but only with another city vote.
The audacity and arrogance of the city council to even
suggest these proposals must mean council members are setting up the rules for
their own welfare because once council members are elected by districts and not
at-large as they have been, many of the current members may not make it onto
the council so they will be looking for gifts and employment contracts from
their crony officials within the city government.
