PROPOSAL 1: Do NOT repeal EM law...

Here in Michigan we have a “historic” election this November as special interest groups have placed specific proposals on the ballot that in my opinion, will dramatically change the way we run the state and dramatically damage our state and damage our rights as citizens of this state.

I have urged a NO VOTE ON ALL PROPOSALS since they entail changing our state constitution which will then put those proposals out of reach of our state government as well as out of reach of us as voters.

I will go through each proposal to make my case for a NO VOTE.

PROPOSAL 1: Repeal Emergency Manager Law.

The law was adopted to help distressed cities and school districts on the verge of bankruptcy. The emergency manager is appointed by the governor of Michigan to essentially “save” failing cities and school districts and the saving part has been demonstrated on numerous occasions and many managers have been called “saviors of our cities”.

If the law did not exist, failing cities and school districts would go BANKRUPT (Chapter 9) and this is what the emergency manager is trying to prevent because no city wants to go bankrupt where a judge basically dismantles a city to pay debts the city has incurred.

The California cities of Valeo and Stockton are great examples of what happens to cities when they go bankrupt…read all about it.

Who wants this “necessary law” repealed?

The biggest opponents of this law are unions because in a fiscal emergency, the manager can invalidate union contracts which he or she feels are unsustainable in the fiscal condition the city or school finds itself in.

This does not mean that this always happens; it just means the manager has the power to invalidate union contracts when he feels it is necessary.

Unions don’t give a shit about the fact that a city is going bankrupt; they just want their work contract to be left in force EVEN if it is what is causing the city or school to go bankrupt.

The other opponents of this law are city or school officials like in Detroit that do not want their powers usurped even if only for a little while, by the emergency manager even if it their mismanagement that cause the fiscal crisis in the first place.

There are NO VALID ARGUMENTS AGAINST THE LAW; all arguments are self serving for a specific group of people like unions and city and school officials.

THE LAW IS GOOD FOR CITIES AND SCHOOLS AND SHOULD BE UPHELD.

VOTE NO ON PROPOSAL 1.
