Read a great front page article in this Sunday’s Detroit
Free Press: HOW NUNS HAVE BECOME SOLDIERS IN THE BATTLE FOR THE WHITE HOUSE by
Patricia Montemurri.
Romney has used nuns in the old penguin habits in some of
his videos while the modern nuns were featured during the Democratic National
Convention.
The article is not just about nuns in this political fight
but about the Catholic vote in general and why both candidates are going after
that vote. Catholics are not united but split the same as the general
population is and so we have Democratic Catholics and we have Republican
Catholics and then we have the swing Catholics that can go either way.
Catholics are further divided into white Catholics and
Latino Catholics; last election Latino Catholics voted for Obama while white
Catholics voted for McCain…interesting…
I find it interesting that the Catholic vote still boils
down to basics; abortion rights, gay marriage and anti-birth control
(contraception) which are considered social issues.
I am still puzzled by the fact that people who call
themselves active or observant Catholics defy their own church leaders and
believe what they “know is right” and vote “their conscience” and don’t
consider themselves “any less Catholic” for doing so…interesting.
My question then is “what does it mean to be Catholic in
this day and age”.
I think our modern day nuns are answering that question for
not only Catholics but all Christians. The nuns are out tending to those humans
that are in need, something they feel Jesus did in his time and they are only
following His example.
I have always maintained that the Vatican has lost its way many
centuries ago and has become a government unto itself, concerned only with
itself and its existence and to hell with the human race.
This election will put Catholics in the spotlight and that
is good. The spotlight will show the deep divisions among white Catholics in America and reveal where most Catholics stand on
issues and that is something the Vatican
will not like to see…maybe the nuns should take over the Vatican and
make it into a real church.
